Adding an old user (xp sp2)

In an attempt to save existing data when upgrading a machine, I only deleted the windows directory and then re-installed windows. Subsequently. I have the old user file in documents and settings. How can I add this user back into the list of valid users or is this not advisable?

You can add the same user name if you wish but to XP that will not be the same user on that PC. XP will assign a different internal id to the user you add and will add a suffix on the user name in the folder structure to differentiate it from the existing name. You would then have to copy all the files or folders you wished from the old name to the new name. Then you culd delete the old structure. The actual user would not have to worry about the suffix XP added. To add a user right click on My Computer. Select Manage. When the Management Console open click the '+' sign next to 'Local Users and Groups. Select 'Users'. In the right pane, right click and select 'New User'.

There is the faster way to access user management console:
click Start | Run, type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 and hit Enter.
You must to logon to the account with Administrator rights, of course.

    Joe,
    Use the same procedure for a "young" user also? Middle aged? <img src=/S/thinks.gif border=0 alt=thinks width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

    Bob,

You must be particularly careful with the 'young' user(s). They tend to run amok and go places where they shouldn't leaving you with a giant mess to clean up. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>.
