    USB drive problems

    Hi,

My USB drive has failed on me and I fear I have lost some valuable work. In Windows Explorer you can browse through all the files that are on the drive, but when you try and open any file you get an error message. I have tried using it on different PCs and get the same problem. I've attached the error message that I see when I try and open a Word document.

If anybody has any ideas of how I could fix it I would really appreciate it. Or do I have to accept that I have lost those files?

    Thanks, Laurie

Can you copy the files to a local hard drive?

I believe you can run Chkdsk on a USB drive which may be worth a try. I would first run it without the option to automatically fix errors selected to see what it reports.

    Hi Leif,

No, I cannot copy the files to a local hard drive. I get an error saying they cannot be read from the source file. I have run Chkdsk (never used it before) and this is what I get. I presume I should say yes!

I think at this point, saying yes will just let chkdsk continue but won't fix the errors. I fear your only option may be to run a full chkdsk, but it is a one-way street. If you can hold on for a while, someone with real-life experience of running chkdsk on a usb drive may chip in with some ideas.

You're right, it didn't work. OK, I'll hang on.

    Thanks anyway, Laurie

Unfortunately, my experience of these things says "time to restore the backups".

Or bite the bullet and run chkdsk with the /f option.
