Meaning of 'Server' (Project Pro 03)

I've been assigned to find out everything about Project Server and am starting from zero. Could someone clarify what the difference is between "MIcrosoft Office Project Server" and "Microsoft Office Project Pro?"

    thanks.... <img src=/S/brainwash.gif border=0 alt=brainwash width=15 height=15>

Microsoft Project Professional is the Desktop version of Microsoft Project. The difference between the Standard edition and the Professional edition is that the professional edition is designed to work with Project Server. The desktop version of Project is pretty much single user environment. You have the ability to share resources and create Master Project sub Project scenarios, but the functionality is very limited.

Project Server is a server based product for Project Portfolios. It needs to be installed on a Windows Server, with SQL Server, IIS and Exchange for full functionality. The server based product allows your project plans to become collaborative by providing security (SQL Server security), the ability to access Projects by multiple users via the Web. The server based product also offers much better ability to have shared resource pools, consolidated projects, and a lot of nice tools for managing project status.

The server based product requires a good amount of technical setup and a project manager to oversee the project management elements. The server based product is predicated on the assumption all users have a good understanding of how Project works. My experience is that it is a wonderful tool the fills a lot of Project Management needs. It is expensive and requires some management and knowledge to be successful.
