What controls the unit of movement of indents? (All)

If I try to move the various indents (First Line, Hanging, Left, Right) and to some extent, the various Tabs, they move in discrete units, and can't be placed elsewhere. Since my ruler is set to inches, I find I can move them in units of 1/16",and this is independent of the magnification.

I can't find anything obvious which allows me to set different movement unit sizes (possibly because I haven't given this the right name!).

    Can someone assist, please? Thanks!

You can move indents and tabs in a more or less continuous way by holding down the Alt key while dragging.
You can specify the indents numerically in the Format | Paragraph dialog, and tabs in the Format | Tabs dialog.

(NB When the ruler is set to centimeters, the indents move in discrete units of 1/8" - go figure!)

You know, that's the first time I've met that Alt trick!

The Format -> Paragraph change method is unusual because the default movement is 0.5"...

And now I open a new document, the unit of movement seems to have coarsened to 1/8".

    Thanks!

The default is set on the drawing grid...
Show the Drawing toolbar, then go to the Draw menu > Grid... > Horizontal spacing.

    Great find!

If you want to set it more precisely than is possible in the Grid dialog, you can set it in code. Units are points (1/72 inch).
For the active document: ActiveDocument.GridDistanceHorizontal = 12 sets the grid spacing to 12 points = 1/6 inch.
For new documents: Options.GridDistanceHorizontal = 18 sets the grid spacing to 18 points = 1/4 inch.
