Password Protect External Drive (Windows/XP SP2)

    Hello All,
I have a neighbor that has purchased an external 300G hard drive (USB connect). He want to keep some confidential data on the drive and wants to password protect the drive. I have look all over MS Support, but cannot find what I need. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Perhaps you should Google for EFS or Encrypting File System? Here's a tutorial on it!

Make certain that he is Very Sure of the downsides of doing this -- because it is intended to be secure, then unhappiness will occur unless you have a plan for what happens if his PC dies, because that's where the Certificate/Key lives. (The tutorial says a bit about this...)

And let us know how you got on!

There's lots of software out there, but I haven't tried any of it. I did a Google on "harddrive password protect software" so YMMV. Here's but two from that search (not free):

To people who share computer: Password Protect Folders
Password Protect review, download at Softpicks Net

Thanks to both John and Al for the tips. I will pass the info along to my neighbor.

    Thanks to all,
