    View, Visit, Hit

    I am going <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

Can anyone give me a simple breakdown of what a View, a Hit and a Visit are in respect to web sites please?

I haven't looked to see whether there is an official, agreed definition, but here's what I think...

"Hit" - a GET request for a URL (plural may refer to all URLs on a server); each reload counts as another hit; total hits on a site includes blank spacer gifs and other stuff that no one thinks is relevant, so the statistic often is meaningless

"Page view" - a GET request for a URL of a resource recognized as a page (could be .html, .asp, .php), not an image or other non-page resource; usually a more relevant indicator of site traffic than "all hits" but still can be fooled by a reload

"Unique visitor" - a person or device that has made one or more GET requests within a given time window, such as a day; requires a session identifier and/or a cookie

I get stats on "Unique visitor" at a site that does not use cookies or sessions. I thought i was probably just based on IP address.

There's a quite interesting description of what you can and can't get from web logs at http://www.analog.cx/docs/webworks.html

That a reasonable approximation, but since our office is behind a firewall that creates the appearance that all 70 of us have the same IP address, such a technique could undercount visitors by some margin.
