Why are my options reset? (2003 SP2)

Suddenly today my carefully selected options in Word have all changed back to MS default settings, so documents can open in Reading Layout (which I don't like, so I have set the option not to allow it), the most recently used file list is set to 4 entries (I like 9), the paragraph marks, tabs and text boundaries I like to see are hidden, selecting automatically selects the whole word (I always uncheck that one), the always create a backup option is unchecked (the most dangerous change of all - I rely on that to get me out of scrapes sometimes). And all the autocorrect options I loathe have come back - like automatically bulleted lists, ordinals with superscript, and so on and so on.

I know how to set all these back the way I like them, but why would they suddenly have changed? It does not appear to be because something has happened to my normal.dot, since my customised toolbar buttons and styles are still there. Could it be that when Office gets an update from MS, that this resets all this kind of thing to the MS out-of-the-box standard? Very frustrating! <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

That sounds like a good idea. When I am sure that everything is the way I want it again, I'll try that.

    Thanks.

The options you mention are stored in the Settings value in the registry (under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0WordDa ta). One possibility is that this registry key has become corrupt, but it is indeed also possible that an Office update has whacked the Settings value. Fortunately, most updates don't do this, but I also noticed recently that some settings had reverted after an update.

When you have set up everything the way you like again, you could use RegEdit to export the HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0WordDa ta key to a .reg file. You can then restore the preferred settings if necessary by importing the .reg file.

Do you by any chance have Adobe Acrobat installed? If so, see: http://www.gmayor.com/lose_that_adob...at_toolbar.htm

Thanks for the thought, but I don't have it. (But I am not sure how the article you link to affects it. I do have Acrobat at work, though, and sometimes it seems to reset my Word settings there - usually after I have logged on from a different workstation from my own one which doesn't have Acrobat. But I'm not sure how your linked article addresses that.)

I am fairly convinced it was something to do with an MS update. The same seemed to have happened to my wife's Word 2002 as to my Word 2003.
