    Outlook copy-paste problem (2003/SP 2)

I'm a new member of this list and have been using MSO for years, but a copy-paste anomaly has me stumped.

About a week ago I started having trouble with using Copy-Paste to copy documents attached to email in Outlook (not Outlook Express) to my HD. I have done this for years: Select the attachment, press Ctrl+C, change to a folder in Windows Explorer and press Ctrl+V. Bingo, I had my project set up and ready for work. Now, Outlook suddenly is forcing me to right-click the attachment, choose Save As, thread my way to a folder on the HD and click OK.

I can use Copy-Paste to attach a file on my HD to an email I am sending.

Nothing has changed there. Does anyone know what is going on?

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

    1) If you click on an attachment in an Outlook message, then click on the Edit menu, is the Copy menu option enabled or disabled?
    2) If it is enabled, select Copy. If you then switch to Windows Explorer and click on the Edit menu, is the Paste option enabled or disabled?

    Hi Hans. Thanks for answering.

    1) After selecting an Outlook attachment, the Copy option on the Outlook Edit menu is enabled.
    2) But after choosing Copy and switching to Windows Explorer, there the Paste option on the Edit menu is disabled.

Do you know why this happens?

    TIA
    Daniel

Strange. Can you copy/paste files within Windows Explorer?

    Yeah, no problem.

For example, once I've r-clicked an attached.doc in Outlook and saved it to a folder in WE, I can then copy the same doc into another folder within WE. Any ideas?

    Regards,
    Daniel

    Thanks for mulling it over.

I think something broke in WE related to Outlook. Suspect the Windows Update machine or, perhaps, registry damage, but no one else has yelled about this, and I'm no techie. As long as it doesn't spread, I can live with it.

Just as a wild guess, try the following. It probably won't help, but it won't do any harm either.

    - Quit Outlook.
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type

    regsvr32 ole32.dll

    - Press Enter or click OK.
    - Start Outlook and see if the problem persists.

    Wow, Hans!

Instant cure. The Paste option is now active in WE, and things are back to normal. How did you tumble to regsvr32 ole32.dll? I'd like to know what was going on, for being a non-techie, this feels, so to speak, tech-spooky.

    Best thanks,
    Daniel

OLE is the "engine" that allows different applications to communicate with each other. While searching the newsgroups for a recent thread (<post#=573,608>post 573,608</post#>), I found the regsvr32 trick; it restores the oriignal settings for OLE. I thought it might just work in your situation, and I'm glad it did!
