Sorting Names In Table (2000/SR-1)

Other than creating separate columns for first, middle and last names, is there any way to sort by a last name if the full name, i.e., John J. Smith, is entered in one column? I am new to Word and would appreciate any information on this. Thanks in advance for any help.

Although it involves separating into separate fields, Word MVP FAQ page may make it easier.

You might also use different character styles for first/middle and last names (which isn't a bad idea anyway and often easily done when importing the names). If you change the character style of the first/middle names to "hidden" text , the names are sorted by last name. After you're done, you change back the style to "not hidden".
