    comments (SR 3)

I'm just preparing a complex document for a meeting. I've got comments that are for some reason are printing with an awkward gap between the lines--the default in Normal is that everything should be at 13pt exactly. When I change the paragaph mark in the comment to single space, it makes no difference. I suspect I've got something odd with a style somewhere in normal.dot. In any case, I'd quite like a distinctive style for comments. Can anyone make any suggestions?

Could you attach a small demo document with dummy text that demonstrates the problem?

Space before and after has been set to Auto for the Comment Text style. If you set them to 0, either by modifying the style or by applying it directly to the comment text, the extra spacing will disappear.

many thanks--but the problem still seems to persist ... even when I edit the style in normal.dot.

I tried changing the paragraph formatting to Space Before = Space After = 0, Line Spacing = Single and still see the problem.

I think you may have some kind of document corruption here. If I add a couple of blank paragraphs to the end of your document, and then copy your original paragraph to another empty document it looks fine.

I tend to agree with Stuart - the document appears to be slightly corrupt.

thanks to both. If you are right, then my normal.dot is corrupted. I've tried saving it as .htm and reopening it, but that hasn't shifted the issue. There's too much in the Normal.dot template for me to be happy just starting again--I'd like to preserve it if possible. Do you have any thoughts on how I might set about repairing?

    cheers

You can use the Organizer (Tools | Templates and Add-Ins, Organizer) to transfer styles, macros, custom toolbars and autotext entries to a new template. And see How can I import and export all my AutoCorrect entries, so they can be transferred to another machine? on the Word MVP site.

thanks for this--I'm now back in the office and can implement it.
On my old Normal.dot, there are some modifications of the menu bar and of some of the inbuilt toolbars (such as formatting). Is there any way I can transfer these into the decorrupted version?

There is no really good way to do that, I think, but the section named "How to create copyable customizations to the built-in toolbars and menus" in Moving (Sharing) Customizations in Microsoft Word describes how you can make it a bit less inconvenient.

many thanks. As I follow that, I find that the corruption reappears ... but at least I have some idea of what was causing it.
