Two Users - One with Trouble (XP Prof w/ SP2)

Two Users - One with Trouble

I have Windows XP Professional, SP2 installed. There are two users. Suddenly, the screen for User Two returned to what appears to be a default situation. (When I created a mythical Third User, that's the screen that came up) (User One is unaffected.)

But the new screen doesn't work properly:

-- Attempt to call up WordPerfect 11 brings up msg "Error - Cannot Initialize"

-- Attempt to bring up Outlook Express brings up "Identity Login" screen, with no identities listed. Following instructions, attempted to create new identity. Msg appeared: "Identity Switch Cancelled" "The current identity could not be changed because one of the applications was unable to switch. Close any open dialog boxes in other applicatiuons before trying again."

-- Start-Control Panel- Appearance and themes: Attempt to change to classic theme brings up msg "The theme could not load. Unspecified Error File CWindowsresourcesThemesWindows" Also, attempt to change desktop does not take.

-- Click on recycle bin has no effect.

--Some applications open: IE, Netscape, Adpbe Photoshop, Real Player.

-- But clicking on others produces no effect: Adobe Reader, Dell Media Experience.

Additional Notes: I messed up the "system restore" by disabling it when it said it couldn't restore to various days in the week before this failure.
    Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

When I created a mythical Third User

Can you explain what this means and what exactly you did to create a mythical (???) user ????? It sounds like you have corrupted the profile of the second user and created a limited and perhaps corrupt other user. How do you access the different profiles now ??? Do all three show on the Welcome screen ???

The Control Panel has a section on creating new user accounts, and that is what I did. All three show up on the welcome screen. "Mysthical" simply means there is no actual additional person..

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

My Mythical person is Harvy. He's a large, pink rabbit.

Seriously though.... are you able to access the second users profile and does it behave normally ???

If you can and it does and the problems are only with the new profile you've created then it's likely that you can simply delete the newly created profile and try again. If however, the new profile is somehow tied in with the 2nd user profile on the system, then you may have 2 corrupt profiles. If there is any important data on the second users profile you should be able to access it through the primary user's profile (if that one has been setup as an Administrator account) to save the data. You would then have to delete the 2 corrupt accounts and recreate the second users profile.

Thanks to Dr Watson for the suggestion. On the second user's profile : We are reaching the limit of my technical understanding (even of the basic terminology) here, but this may tell us something in this regard: A look from Windows Explorer at Documents and Settings/[seconduser]/Desktop shows nothing. Likewise, for the new mythical user. The actual screen in each case shows several icons, some of which bring us to the applications, and some of which don't. They may come from the All Users settings.
I don't understand the significance of the failings of the new mythical user account, or how they might relate to the failings of the Second User account.
    Again, thanks!

Re: Two Users - One with Trouble (XP Prof w/ SP2)

This is a difficult situation to troubleshoot remotely. It sounds as though you have set up the "mythical user" as a limited or restricted account (can't install or remove programs, can't access certain programs and functions, etc. The part I don't understand is how the second and third profiles became involved with each other to the extent that you are describing. Individual profiles or accounts can become corrupt, but I've never heard of a corrupt profile corrupting another profiile. The only thing I can think of is that it might relate to something you did when setting up the "mythical person" profile, but I can't begin to guess what that might have been. If no other answers are forthcomming, here in the Lounge or elsewhere, I'd suggest that you try to salvage any important data from the second profile and then delete both the second user and your mythical friend and try to create a new profile for your second user again.
