    Add Hardware (XP sp1)

when i attempt to add new hardware i get the message.cannot run 2 device installations. It says another device is in the process of being added and to wait till it finishes. This message has been coming up on this computer for 3 years, so no new hardware could be added. How can i fix this problem for the user.

    eridel,
The FIRST thing I would do is to upgrade to XP SP2.

What new hardware are you trying to install?

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

If you're comfortable working in the registry, you could try this. First, make a System Restore point.

Then click Start->Run, type "regedit.exe" in the Open box, and click OK.

    2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemSetup"

    3. If there is any key or values named "FactoryPreInstallInProgress", please right click and delete it.

Thanks Doc..i searched the registryand couldnt find any mention of what u suggested. Looks like a format may be the answer. The computer is going to another person in our organisation soon, so i may format it before handing it over to them.

    <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> I found the "other" two steps here.

    4. Repeat the above steps to delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftFactory

    5. Restart the computer.

Upon restart my PC ran the Hardware Wizard and prompted me for a restart so it could rebuild the deleted registry keys. After restart it was fixed and I am now able to use the "Add Hardware Wizard".
