    Caption formats (Word 2002 SP2)

A standard format for documents in our office requires captions in the body of the document to only have a number but captions in appendices are prefaced with the letter A, B or whatever, then the caption number to denote an illustration in an appendix.

I have tried dividing the appendices from the main document with a section break but when I add the chapter number to the appendix captions, the main document captions have an A added before all its captions as well.

Is there a way to prevent this behaviour?

    Thanks in advance, Geoff

Two possible ways to do this.
    1. Use a separate file for the Appendices and let the caption include the chapter number
    2. Have the caption exclude the chapter number and add it with a separate styleref field in the case of figures in the Appendix.

Perhaps you have updating styles. Uncheck that option and see if that doesn't help.

    Just to close this one.

The styles were not set to Auto Update, I wish it had been that simple. :-(

The field code suggested by Andrew works. The only downside to the way I set it up is that you cannot "Select All" and use F9 to update all fields. When I did that, the codes that inserted chapter numbers in the Appendix Section overwrote the first section captions where I didn't want them.

Individually updated, the captions all stay the way I want and the document appears stable.

    Thanks for the help. Geoff

Perhaps you implemented the captions in a way different to what I thought - i would have thought that a full field update would work happily.

Can you attach a sample of what you ended up with that demonstrates the issue you are getting on Select All + F9?
