    Project with no hours (2k3)

i want to add a task that runs the length of my project but has Zero hours associated with it. its basically a task that will be absorbed in other tasks but i have to show it in my schedule. is there a way to do this? i tried assigning myself to it with 0% and have a start and finish date of 5/8/06 to 10/20/06 but it won't let me do it. any thoughts?

i got it! i set a 'start no later than' constraint, and then a deadline and it gave me a dotted line from start to finish after i set the hours to zero.

    thanks john! <img src=/S/sarcasm.gif border=0 alt=sarcasm width=15 height=15>

You have been able to find a solution that is working. Another idea is to just make a task and don't assign any resources to the task. No resources assigned, no hours assigned to the task. I am not sure if you needed to see some kind of ownership of the task or not. If you need to see a name without any associated hours you could create a material resource with a name and just add it to the task. This type of resource does not have any hours associated with it.

    John,

Hardcoding the task as you did works, however, if there is a schedule delay or your timeframe expands your summary task will be shorter then the full project task.

You could also add a summary task and shift everything below it to the right to show the length of the entire project or create a hammock task that is linked as a start to start on the first task and finish to finish on the last task. This way, the task that spans the project will change as the project changes.
