Turning off Automatic Updates (Windows XP)

So, I'm setting up new Dell machines for my company and the first thing I do, before loading any other programs, is to make sure that Windows is updated. Now, this should be the case as Dell just shipped them two weeks ago, but I'm anal retentive and there are actually some updates that have come out since then, so it's a good thing. The thing that bugs me is that when I go out to the windowsupdate.microsoft.com site, the only apparent way to download updates it to download and install their annoying little AutoUpdate program first. So I do this. And it installs itself, and there is apparently no way to turn the d@mn thing off. I go into Control Panel | Automatic Updates and the options to turn it off are greyed out. Why do I want to turn it off? Because one of the programs that I install is EPO which downloads the updates from a SUS so I don't need this little AutoUpdate headache trying to go out and update on it's own. Not to mention that NOT every Windows update is great, as shown by the one two weeks back that @#$!% up PCs with HP products on them. SO....I've logged in as a domain admin and a local admin to the machine, but neither apparently has the right to turn off the AutoUpdates. Anyone out there have an idea how to turn it off. Do I need a red line to the Pope to get this thing done?

    Thanks - Sat.

You don't have the option to do this with the UI if you are a domain member and/or have the WSUS (or SUS) client installed. You need to sse gpedit to control AU. Start | Run | gpedit.msc. Then go to Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Updates - change the settings in the right panel to what you need.

So you're saying that it's the SUS's fault that I can't turn off the AutoUpdates? So, in theory, before adding the registry setting that would look at the SUS, I should have the ability to turn the AutoUpdates off?

The short answer is yes. Most likely, you installed EPO before attempting to turn off the Autoupdate feature and EPO has removed your ability to do so.

Open Registry Editor (Start | Run, type REGEDIT and hit Enter).

    Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesExplorer

Create a new Dword Value (Edit | New | DWORD Value), name it NoWindowsUpdate and set the value to 1.

If you want to prevent all users of this computer to access WIndows Updates, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionPoliciesExplorer (or create this key) and set the same Dword value.
