Free OCR - that actually works!

I've personally been rather disappointed with many OCR (Optical Character Recognition) programs, both free and commercial, until I was alerted to the one here:
    http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=http:...oli.asp?ID=2904

The direct download link is Download di FineReader 4.0 Professional (italiano) (55 MB circa) and the default installation is in English.

HINT: translate the page in a browser window next to the actual page. That way, you can click on the links on the actual page and know what they're talking about. You'll need to do this because clicking on the links in the translated page doesn't work and you need to obtain the registration code by clicking on the "questa pagina" link in the line that says:

"- registrarsi presso questa pagina specificando un indirizzo e-mail valido. In questo modo, nel giro di pochi minuti, si ricever

Hi Alan, I tried clicking on the "questa pagina" link but Adblock blocked the link. Do you use Firefox/Adblock? I'm a little nervous of pursuing this.

    Thanks,

Gosh, I wonder whether that is legit. The current version of FineReader Professional -- version 8.0 -- runs about $400, so it certainly isn't free anymore. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

Sorry, can't comment on what Adblock filters out. I had no problems with IE viewing the page.

I'm not sure it was ever a "free" product, as such. I was under the impression that an old version had been released as free, probably as a marketing exercise to promote the new version.

<hr>I was under the impression that an old version had been released as free, <hr>
I had a magazine coverdisk version of FP4 (not sure which flavour) from several years ago (probably from when FP7.0 came out). So they have issued non-restricted 'free' versions in the past.
Sadly when my PC went belly up last year I couldn't remember which of my friends had the coverdisk so I am very pleased to have come across this one as this is by far the best OCR software I've used. I am happy to consider this a 'legit' replacement

PS the Questa Pagina simply pops up a page that asks for simple demographic data (age band, gender, favourite region of Italy and OS) before leading to the key.

Thanks for the verification. I figured it was legit - a marketting exercise like older versions of Paintshop Pro, Jaws PDF, Norton Utils etc. It's also good to know that you've also found it "head & shoulders" above the rest of the contenders.

Good find, Alan. I'll keep it for eventual future use.

    Thanks!

I finally couldn't stand the suspense, so I downloaded it also, this morning. I must admit that even after following your instructions I had a hard time remembering which page to click on the links. I got my registration code but have not installed it yet. Tomight's project...

Re: Free OCR - that actually works!

I thought I'd add a little bit of followup to this thread, Alan. Back awhile ago, after downloading and installing, I gave the software a shakedown cruise on a (USA) power of attorney document I've been meaning for some time to do. This is a POA from my wife to me from a few years ago and I've been meaning to duplicate it and change the required wording to make a "new" document for me-to-my son, just in case. When I scanned the wife's document, the OCR product did an excellent job with zero mistakes except for the last page that had signatures and a bunch of horizontal lines on it. When I folded that page to "hide" all that signature stuff, I got an excellent document that required little to no editing. This is really a nice product!

On a humorous note, I have received a couple of Italian language emails from them that are for peripheral purposes and I wouldn't consider to be spam. I just have to translate the emails to even see what they're pitching.

    Anyways, good product!

Glad it fired for you Al. I just hate it when I recommend software that works really well for me, but is disastrous for anybody else! <img src=/S/meltdown.gif border=0 alt=meltdown width=15 height=15>

You'll need to follow the link on the page I referred to: Pagina per la registrazione della propria copia di FineReader 4.0 Professional. I suggest you use an online translation to aid in filling out the form (unless you speak Italian). They then mail you a serial, so you need to use a valid (perhaps "throwaway") e-mail address.

You don't need to include an email address. The minimum to get you through that page is to select a region of Italy.

And then click the Invia button
