Trouble starting

Hi I have a Compaq Presario used had windows 98 but someone put XP on it. Everytime I shut the computer off I also shut the power strip off. When I go to start the computer I turn the power strip on and the computer will start runing, will not really. The light that has a sun comes on (Left light) but the light that has the can like picture does not, and you can hear the computer runing. Also If I turn the montor on it will just go back off by its seft right away, Everytime. The computer will not shut off by the power botton so I have to turn the power strip off. When I turn the power strip back on the computer acts like its going to strart runing but it does not. It will just click. So I turn it on just like everyother computer. Then everything runs great. My husband said just do shut the power strip off, but I do on my other computer and it does not act like this. I just got this computer 2 days ago at a rumage sale. did I get riped off

    Re: Trouble starting

First, I moved your post to this forum because you say the machine has XP and it sounds a little like a settings problem. Why do you shut off the power strip when you shut down the computer? That shouldn't be necessary and I wonder what would happen if you don't do that. Next, you say that "everything runs great." Does that mean that you DO eventually get in to Windows XP successfully? If you do, I next think we need to check the "power settings" in both XP and your machine's BIOS. Do you know how to access the BIOS?

The computer will not shut off by the power botton

Have you tried holding the button in for 10 seconds when you turn off the power on the PC ?? As Al said, this sounds like a settings issue and perhaps the monitor is "set" to be turned on and off by the PC when it is shut down (correctly). I'm assuming that you are going through the usual XP shutdown process Start>Turn Off Computer>Turn Off.

I shut the power strip off because we have kids. If I do not shut if off the computer runs great, I would not even know that this a problem. No I do not know how to get into the BIOS. What kind of power settings do I want XP and the BIOS to say?

To access Compaq BIOS, press F10 key on your keyboard during bootup (when you see Compaq splash screen).

    But try this first:

Click Start > Control Panel, then "Performance and Maintenance", then "Power Options". On "Power Options Properties" window click "Advanced" tab and then in "Power buttons" section select "Shut down" from drop-down list under "When I press the power button of my computer".
