Disk Stuck on Read Only (XP SP2)

On our LAN, we have a disk to which we perform backups. The disk is is an external Western Digital drive. About two weeks ago all the folders on the disk went into a RO state. The disk itself is set for network sharing but every folder shows that it is RO. Even if I set a single folder to network sharing, when I go back and check sharing it shows RO again. I cannot find anything on the physical disk itself to change this setting.

    Any ideas?

    Many thanks,
    Al

Try this. Open the drive in question. Then go to Edit>Select All and then right click on any folder and select Properties. Remove the check from the read only box and click OK. That should remove the read only status from all the folders.

Re: Disk Stuck on Read Only (XP SP2)

First I'll admit I don't know anything about the "whys and wherefors" of this topic, but as far as I know it's normal for folders in XP to show up as read only. All of mine do, including both internal hard drive and external USB drive used for backup. The read only status doesn't prevent sharing as far as I can tell and I backup weekly to the external drive and nightly on selected files. Folders, in spite of their read only state, can be modified, renamed, deleted and what have you. One thing that may be different in our cases is that I share the entire drive, not individual folders. Are your backups failing because of the RO condition?

    In addition:

    - Logon to the computer, to which USB drive is connected, to the account with Administrator rights.
    - Open Windows Explorer and check that Simple File Sharing is disabled (Tools | Folder Options > View tab > Scroll down to the bottom "Advanced Settings" list > Uncheck "Use simple file sharing [Recommended]")
    - In Windows Explorer, right-click the drive in question and from pop-up menu choose "Sharing and Security"
    - On the Drive Properties dialog ("Sharing" tab) click "Permissions" button
    - Make sure that "Full Control" is set to "Allow" for "Everyone" group. You can instead add specific users or groups permissions to this drive. For example, your users have accounts with "Guests" permissions. Click Add button, on the next screen Advanced button, then on the next screen "Find Now" button, then select Guests from the list, click OK button, click OK button to close the next screen, select Guests on "Group or user names" list and allow Full control on Permissions list. Click OK and OK once again to close Properties window.
