Rogue Graphic! (WinXP/Word2003)

Help!! I'm being slowly driven nuts by one rogue graphic that I just can't get hold of!!

I have a set of templates set up externally, which I've been given the task of just tidying up and making them look roughly like the standard layout we use - oh, and making them work if they don't, which several haven't!! Anyway, one of the things I have to do is change the font from Times New Roman to Arial, which throws all the layouts out - especially when the idiot who set them up used graphical shapes and lines instead of tables to put the text in boxes!

(S)he also used small graphical squares to put in tickboxes, and it's one of these that's driving me up the wall - I need to move it slightly (or delete it, or ANYTHING really!!) but I can't grab it, I can't select it, I can't move on to it and I can't find the anchor it's attached to!! The anchor is obviously way down the document somewhere because everytime I adjust vertical positioning of the text further down this box moves as well - arrrrggghhh!

Please, someone tell me if there are "next shape" and "previous shape" toolbar buttons somewhere, or how to select a graphic that WILL NOT be selected, or even just how to make the anchors visible when the graphic isn't selected - even if I could just move the anchor back up to where it is, I could then align everything else around it - you see how desperate I am?!

I'm afraid I can't attach a copy, it's confidential, but any help anyone can give would be gratefully received!!

Not sure if this will help you, but it's worth a shot. Try using the drawing canvas to select the rogue graphic. In Word 2002 and 2003 connectors (not sure if these are connectors or not that were used) are unavailable unless you use a drawing canvas.

1) The Edit | Go To dialog has an object to select objects, and Previous and Next buttons, but it doesn't work very well in my experience.

2) Display the Drawing toolbar and click the Select Objects button (the northwest pointing arrow). You can then drag a rectangle around a shape to select it.

3) You could type an instruction such as

ActiveDocument.Shapes(3).Select

in the Immediate window in the Visual Basic Editor, then press Enter, to see which shape is selected

4) Could it be a shape in the header or footer? If so, you can only select it from View | Header and Footer, not from the body of the document.

5) If all else fails, could you attach a document containing ONLY the rogue shape?

You can also try this: CTRL + F to find and in Find What put ^1 and that will find pictures for you.

Hi Hans, thanks for the suggestions.

1 - tried that - apparently shapes are not "objects" by that definition
2/3/4 - haven't tried those ... watch this space ...
5 - if I could separate the rogue shape out, I could deal with it! But I can't track down it's anchor and therefore can't post it on its own!

Thanks, Cabratt, but apparently it doesn't consider shapes to be pictures!

No 2 did it!! [yippee] I was able to select it with a marquee and once selected I could track down the anchor (which was right at the bottom of the page, miles away!). Then I moved the anchor up to the line the graphic was on and all of a sudden the graphic behaved and I could select and work with it as normal. Phew!!

Thanks Hans!!
