    Copying Autonumber (2003 SP1)

I have a table with an AutoNumber field, ID. I want to copy the data to a new long integer field, DupID. This is in preparation for splitting the table as discussed in <post#=571,051>post 571,051</post#>. DupID will become the Foreign Key in the second table. I tried to use an update query to populate DupID but it failed because ot Type Conversion Error. I guess Access doesn't like copying an Autonumber field, even though they are both long integers. How do I make this work?

Make sure that the 'Update to' line says [ID] and not "ID".

Thanks, Hans. Worked like a charm.
