Problem Updating Security UpdatesX (XP Home SP1)

My sister has a problem updating security updates. When she tries to update she gets a message that says "You have to have IE6." She's been using IE6 for over a year. This is the first time she's run into this problem.

I never had that particular problem and therefore I have no idea how to fix it. Please suggest a fix and make me look brilllant, she thinks I'm the best thing since sliced bread.

    Appreciate all suggestions.

    Gloria,
Check this link on how to repair-reinstall IE 6. It sounds like she has a corrupt file or reg entry somewhere that isn't allowing Win Update to recognize that IE 6 is indeed installed.

    REPAIR6

You should first try to go to Start>Run, type in sfc(space)/scannow and see if that corrects the problem. Make sure you have the XP CD handy, it will ask you for it.

Failing that, I would try the methods suggested at the Elder Geek link above.

Thanks Bob. I thought of that but I hoped there might be another way. To edit the registry, I will have to lead her, she's afraid to do it by herself like I was when I was a newbie. I sent her your reply and asked if she would try and do it alone, if not, I will lead her again.

Here's an update to the update problem. My sister solved the problem all by herself, she went into the control panel and selected Display. She said she was asked it she wanted to update the driver. She said yes and when it installed, all of her problems disappeared. Therefore, consider this post closed.

    Thanks for your suggestions Bob.

    Gloria,
    That's good news!
Little by little, your sister will gain more confidence ( read less calls for your help ) and be able to figure out some of lifes little problems. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16> <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>
