Network Printer name invalid / incorrect

I have a home network with 2 servers (1 x XP, 1 x W2K SP4). There is a Dell printer attached to the XP box which is shared on the network, as are some of the XP folders. Everything was working fine up until about 3 weeks ago, when the W2K system began not to pickup the Dell Printer. I first noticed this when in an aplication (excel, word) the Dell printer (which was the default) was not available. The XP can still use the printer.

I checked the network (from W2K). The folders and the Printer are still visable in "My Network places". The folders are accessable read/write. When I click on the printer I get the message
"before you can use the printer it must be installed on your computer" I click next and get the message "you entered a printer name that is incorrect or the specified printer is no longer connected to the server". The printer name I see is "DellPhot".

I then went to the "add printer" and tried to add a new network printer using the wizard. Again the wizard was able to see the printer on the XP system but when I highlight the printer the Printer information provided is "the printer name is invalid". When I click on the printer I get "you entered a printer name that is incorrect or the specified printer is no longer connected to the server".

What changed to make this happen ? I dont know. No new softwere, patches, virus scan upto date etc..

I deinstalled and reinstalled the printer on the XP system. No change.
I disabled all firewalls. No change.
I powered on/off everything. No change.

    Any help much apreciated.

Since you reinstalled the printer, did you share it?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Yes it is shared. On the XP system I can see it, and use it as a network printer ( My Network).
On the W2K I can see it, but cannot use (install it)..

    Very frustratingggggg

Does "everyone" have permission to use it?

Not sure. When I look at the properties tab on the XP system, there is no "security " tab, so Iam not clear on the permission settings. According to the XP help the default is to allow all use a printer.

I have attached my wifes laptop(XP) to the network, and it can see and use the printer, so I guess the permissions are ok.

It seems as though the Win2k drivers have taken a hit. You should uninstall the printer then re-install. See Steps to Manually Remove and Reinstall a Printer Driver for information on removal of old drivers.

Deinstalled drivers. Actually the drivers were not on the system, only the registry entries.
However not much change. Still get the printer name invalid when I go to reinstall ( attached is image of wizard).

What is the share name on the machine where the printer is physically installed?

Sorry, I meant the share name for the printer. Is it 'DellPhot'?

Have you double checked to make sure that the Win2k user has permission to access the printer? Have you checked the Dell support site to make sure you have the latest drivers for the printer?

Re: Network Printer name invalid / incorrect

I've read somewhere (Dell forums???) that Win2k has trouble accessing some shared Dell printers. Driver issues IIRC. With DELL/Lexmark & MS pointing fingers. Don't recall the resolution - if any.

What would happen if you just changed the share name of the printer to say "dellp" or something?
