Changing name of drive.

Whaen I open My Computer I see 3 1/2 Floppy (A), Win 98SE © among other entries and would like to know if the names like Win98Se can be removed. I would like to keep the drive letter as is. Is there a way to do this?

In the future, please edit your post instead of starting a new thread with exactly the same subject. I have deleted the empty post.

I may not be understanding your question - it's a pretty basic topic. If you right-click on a drive and select Rename, you should be able to "call" the drive any name you would like.

    Re: Changing name of drive.

I would like to change the names of the items that are in the drop down list when I left click on the "My Computer" icon on my desk-top. If I right click on any of them I do not get the drop down list with "Rename". The only thing that I can see that might allow me to change the name of one of those items is "Properties" which has a label box that is grayed out and cannot accept any info. How would I chang that grayed out box so that I can add a name?

    Re: Changing name of drive.

(Edited by skitterbug on 25-May-06 22:03. Added a bit more information!)
You could do it by using MS-DOS. Click on Start/Run and type in "cmd" without the quotes. This brings up the "command window". Then I found these directions as follows which worked for me:

To change the name of a disk drive from a MS-DOS prompt, type the below text; substitute "yourname" for what you wish to name the drive.

    label c: yourname

The above example will rename your C: drive to "yourname". Substituting the "c" for any other drive letter will rename that drive.

So I renamed my "C" drive to "Skitterbug" and it now shows up in "My Computer as - Skitterbug (C: ) But it doesn't have the extra space between the C: and the parentheses. I just can't figure out what tags to use to negate the smilie that keeps appearing when I type the colon and parentheses. The drives will retain the appropriate drive letter, but so far as I know, you can name any of your drives in this manner. Hope this helps and that it is what you wanted to do.

Added: This is the reference web page that I used. Maybe it has more information on it that may interest you.
