Font issue (?) in Opera (Opera 8.54)

I have been looking at a site with a list comparing features of a certain product. In IE and FF, ticks appear in each column in the appropriate places. In Opera, I don't get ticks but the letter u with dots over it. What setting in Opera do I need to change? (See screenshot below for comparison.)

I haven't used Opera, but I assume it has something similar to IE and Firefox's View>Character Encoding flyout menu. If so, can you see differences there?

I suspect it is a code page issue, but not having Opera I can't help you further...

    Hi Ian,

Can you give the two pages that you have used in your comparison? I decided to download Opera to see if I have the same type of problem as you have? One thing about Opera, it doesn't seem as fast as FF. <img src=/S/nope.gif border=0 alt=nope width=15 height=15>

The page I was looking at was here .

(Funny - I find Opera at least as fast as FF!)

That page actually uses the "u whose name I don't know" in its code, but styles it using the Wingdings font:
    <blockquote><hr><code><font face="Wingdings" size="2">

That same character (u with two dots over it) is also listed in the Times New Roman Glyph Catalog. I've changed every font in preferences that I thought would affect the type but nothing has helped. I have also downloaded the beta 9.0 version of Opera and that didn't make a difference either. Trying to find the webmaster of that site is a real pain too because I thought perhaps a note to them would help. I'm out of ideas - for now.

Re: Font issue (?) in Opera (Opera 8.54)

On a serious note, I honestly cannot believe that a web designer has actually created a tag soup that defines the font specifically as Wingdings <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15> Ian has found the reason why...he can't read it....

I remember creating <post:=568,939>post 568,939</post:> that showed how to import non-standard fonts (not a great way to do things) maybe Ian could email them the link and they can redevelop their siteand gently remind them that there are people who use "proper" browsers to view their site <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

OK - but why can I read it OK with IE and FF but not Opera? Is there a setting in Opera I can change? <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

Re: Font issue (?) in Opera (Opera 8.54)

    Hi Ian

It appears the answer is no....bad web design. Using Wingdings and webdings does not use unicode charactering specified in the html code for that site. Have a look at this, it appears to have a good run down of the cause and much more eloquent than my explanantion.

Wingdings character set and equivalent Unicode characters

If you use Opera a lot, I think it would be worth checking the Opera forums/newsgroups for this issue. It must have come up before by now... and if not, they may want to know about it.

Re: Font issue (?) in Opera (Opera 8.54)

I don't use Opera much except to experiment with it. Even though Ian thinks it is fast, I sure haven't had that same result on my Win XP box. FF and even IE load and run faster than Opera. In fact, I even downloaded the Netscape browser to see what would happen, and it is faster than Opera. Anyway, hunting through the Opera forum may be helpful. Thanks for the suggestion! I bet their forum isn't as good as our Lounge. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
