I'm fairly certain this has been covered here before - did you search the forum?

Otherwise, there is the aptly named http://www.hit-counter-download.com/

Leif must have seen me looking up some old posts <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Although this <post:=503,557>post 503,557</post:> is about ASP directly....Jeff does mention some other resources in the surrounded messages

If I'd seen you searching, I would have just suggested waiting until someone else came back with a link to <post:=503,557>post 503,557</post:> <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

    Yes, I see, and had I been looking at you, I would have suggested this <post#=576,570>post 576,570</post#> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

If nothing else works, you might want to try Google AdSense, which lets you put adverts on your website. When you log in to your Adsense account, you can get a load of reports including how many hits your website has received.

    hit counter-pre-asp

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by iamjlopez on 30-May-06 07:48. )</P>I need a simple hit counter for html, pre asp. It is an older site with html only, no asp extensions on the server. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the input. I should have clarified better. I am on a gov't computer and cannot do ads. I need the html code only. I need to track hits only. I cannot be tied to any external sources / servers.HTH. TIA.

    Re: hit counter-pre-asp

In that case, I'm afraid it can't be done. In order to count hits, you need some kind of server-side functionality - whether it's your server or someone else's. Client side stuff (like html, javascript, etc.) loads afresh with every visit (or hit of the refresh button), with no memory - so there's no way to store information on the fly.

It may be worth checking exactly what is and isn't allowed on your site - the powers that be may allow an exception for something as harmless as a hit counter. Other than that, I'm afraid you're scuppered.

    Re: hit counter-pre-asp

Do you really need a hit counter? A hit counter displays some crude measure of hits to every visitor to the site.

If you want to know how many hits your site has received, the server logs should provide much better information. Can you get access to them? Do they provide any analysis of them?
    Regards
    John

Thank you for the response. My employer wants a snapshot of visitors to the site for a week. It is for some internal adjustments to the mail system. It is a web-accessible mail site for the road warriors. I do not have security access to the server.

    Re: hit counter-pre-asp

Most servers keep logs of all requests serviced. These sometimes are available via FTP and in other cases you would need to get the cooperation of the webmaster/server operator. Once you have copies of the logs, you can analyze them offline using lots of software tools, including some free ones. However, if you don't have the logs, can't embed a link to an invisible 1-pixel image (web bug) on an external server (to use its logs), and can't use server-side scripting (to drive your own web log), then you'd just have to do it on the honor system: "if you viewed this page, please send me an email." <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>
