Add/Remove Programs (no 'Modify' or 'Delete') (XP Home SP2)

Tonight I found that in Add/Remove Programs, I no longer see the "Change" or "Delete" buttons for any of my programs. None of them! My programs appear in the list, and the list tells me how often I've used an application and when I last used it. But I have no way to remove or modify any program. I've never seen this problem before. Any ideas?

Alan: Thanks a heap for your advice! I followed your instructions and especially the path you prescribed. At the bottom, I found a fairly long list of stuff with totally obscure "names" (just strings of alpha and numeric characters that mean nothing to me). None of those items displayed "NoRemove" or "NoModify" in the right pane. However, I did see one recognizable item: Skype. I followed the procedures, and yes, now I have the buttons back for Skype.

May I assume that I have to go through these steps for each item I might wish to modify or remove...? I'm curious how I came to this situation. A few days ago, I made a number of changes to my system to make it work faster. I followed (carefully) the steps given in an on-line course offered by PC Magazine. The changes I made did involve the Registry Editor, and they did improve the performance of my computer...a lot! It's working really fast now, but something I did affected the Add/Remove Programs applet, but I don't know what caused this problem.

Something you did in the registry caused those other values to be changed. Not knowing what you did, it would be almost impossible to figure out what caused the change.

Next time you are tempted to do some editing of the registry I'd suggest that you make a backup of your registry first. That way, if there are any unwelcome changes like this, you can restore your backup and move on. This problem is very minor, but some registry edits will leave you with an electronic doorstop.

Re: Add/Remove Programs (no 'Modify' or 'Delete') (XP Home SP2)

    Hi Lucas

I'm glad it helped solve your problem, at least in part. I'm not too familiar with this solution myself. I had a look through my own registry for a program that DOES display the Change/Remove button in the Control Panel applet, but could find no references to the "NoRemove" and "NoModify" keys. I don't know anything further about this, I'm afraid. Here's a little more info I found:

    Add and Remove - Restrictions

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: (The first one is per user, the second, per system)

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesUninstall]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionPoliciesUninstall]

Create a new DWORD value for each restriction required according to the table below. Set the value to equal "1" to enable the restriction or "0" to disable it.

    NoAddRemovePrograms - Disable Add/Remove Programs
NoRemovePage - Disable Change and Remove Programs
    NoAddPage - Disable Add Programs
NoWindowsSetupPage - Disable Windows Components Wizard
NoAddFromCDorFloppy - Hide "Add a program from CD-ROM or disk" option
NoAddFromInternet - Hide "Add programs from Microsoft" option
NoAddFromNetwork - Hide "Add programs from your network" option
NoServices - Go directly to Windows Components Wizard
    NoSupportInfo - Disable Support Information
You may need to restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

I don't think you're alone with this glitch either:

Re: Add/Remove Programs (no 'Modify' or 'Delete') (XP Home SP2)

I heartily second your advise, and I'm happy to say I follow it religiously. I don't like to tamper with the registry lightly. I did back up the registry before I made those changes, but I'm so happy with the speed my machine now exhibits that I hesitate to restore the old settings.

Truth is, I'm now more suspicious of some other changes I made just before this problem developed. I had an issue with my Norton Internet Security, and I had to delete my old install of NIS and reinstall it. (All with the tutelage of Symantec's help desk.) In fact, all the newly installed NIS stuff DOES display the Add and Remove buttons...but nothing else has them! Hm-m-m...looks like Norton again.
