Adobe Reader Problems

I attempted the update to newest version, but that is ONLY for XP ! I was always told to remove all previous versions...which I did...BAD Mistake !!!
Anyway, after removing older version, rebooted, then went to the link provided, proceeded to re-download the Version 6.0.1 (the Basic version)...I got the following popup error after the Adobe Download Manager did it's thing:
The configuration data for this product is corrupt. Contact your support personnel.
I went to the Adobe Support section, followed their instructions (removing via Add/Remove), searched for all references to Adobe/Acrobat, rebooted, went into SafeMode, searched the Registry for all Adobe/Acrobat, deleted those, rebooted, and came here for .

I need this stuff.

TIA

Re: Adobe Reader Problems

Adobe's site seems slow this morning... so I gave up and went to http://www.foxitsoftware.com/ instead.

Others have recommended the Foxit Reader here before, but I haven't tried it myself. The manual lists most versions of Windows that might still be in use.

darn it! just finished typing a bunch of things here...went to 'preview'...and it went to 'expired'!
Anywho, all is ok now...I'm fixed as to Adobe...not updating/upgrading ever again!
Foxit is too bloated.

Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure what you mean. The download (free version) is 1.3 MB. Does it expand hugely when you install it?

(For comparison, my Acrobat Reader 7 folder is about 144 MB...)

It doesn't expand at all - the downloadable .EXE is the standalone program - it will fit on and run from a floppy disk!
Too bloated?

I do agree on that generally. It doesn't seem as intuitive as AR, and lacks some of the handier features IMO. Despite this, I still use it as my PDF reader... horses for courses.

Re: Adobe Reader Problems

I like Foxit and use it for my primary PDF reader; lightweight and very fast. I keep Adobe though because for some reason Foxit can't open some of the files I receive - but Adobe has no problem with them. Since disk space will likely never be a problem this approach works very well for me.
