Unlocker Application

Today, I needed to use Unlocker to dispose of a contrary file. A notice popped up about an available update to V 1.8.3 so I thought I'd pass this information along to anyone else that might be using this program. The update can be found here.

Jezza Bear,

I have not had the experience of trying to delete a stubborn, "unable to delete" folder from a removable hard disk so I cannot speak from first hand experience. BUT from their faq page, it appears that Unlocker should be able to accomplish this for you! I hope this helps you with this annoyance - but maybe next time you should just take your chain saw to it!

Oh Hello Badger of very large tail

It is not a system folder but a folder called BBK...I emptied it as it had old stuff in it and after that my HD says cannot delete it with the similar messages that are on Skitter's link....Nothing drastic, just a mild irritation

Jerry,
I use unlocker for the more stubborn files AND folders.
It should do the trick for you.

Re: Unlocker Application

I was just wondering whether it had the name of one of the reserved filenames, like CON, LPT1, COM1, etc! These require (used to require?) a devious DOS trick to remove...

Re: Unlocker Application

Jerry,
Just did a Search on all my HDs and no LPT1 folder found.
Have you disabled the Parallel port in the BIOS, if not being used? Then delete if necessary.

Re: Unlocker Application

Yes, surprise! Have a look at the new, improved <!mskb=315226>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 315226<!/mskb>, and there are lots more references on the net. The trick is remembering that Microsoft has used the words "files reserved names", which are not necessarily what you would have specified as search terms...

Re: Unlocker Application

As well as removing such a "sticky" folder at the command prompt, using
rd .c:con

you can also create one, using
md .c:con

Why? Well, it's a Q&D way to create an "undeletable" folder on a computer whose user is not old-school DOS savvy. It won't protect the files within though, so limited usefulness.

The reserved names are PRN, AUX, CON, LPT1, LPT2, COM1, COM2, NUL, CLOCK$. More LPT and COM options were added later, as were some other DOS-specific ones for HIMEM, the MS Mouse, etc.

Alan

The Microsoft article has it slightly differently from you, with only a single backslash before the C:, as in
rd .c:con

Are you saying it also works as you wrote the command?

It appears to on my XP Pro. I know it did on 98/95 and, stretching the confidence in my aging brain cells, also in 3.11/3.1.
