    More resources questions (2k3)

to be honest, i'm really getting frustrated with Project - mostly because i don't know how to use it. Anyway, at this point my project file is almost done. the problem is i had to tweak hours to be more in some tasks and less in others, but now it has me working 6 hour days some days and 12 hours other days because of overlapping tasks. is there a button i can press to just fix this?? <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> if it were that simple... really, i guess i just want to spread the tasks out even more to get the hours down to regular 8 hour days. whats the easiest way to do this? if i have more hours than i can possibly use i can always give some hours to other people but i have to keep a certain amount of hours per task as well.

Edit: Is there a way to just transfer excess hours from one resource to another? that could help alleviate the problem i guess. but in places where i have less than 8 hours i would need to transfer hours back to myself to get to 8 hours... i feel like there should be some sort of automagical way to accomplish this through project.

    John,

Resource Leveling can be a tedious task. I personally find it to be a manual process I usually accomplish using the resource usage view. I add the Details in the right pane for overallocation and remaining availability and redistribute hours as necessary. I also depending on the level of detail I need just take an overview of the resource allocations and make a decision based on the information I see not to spend my time detailing the plan just accept the picture I see it as being realistic enough. Project is only good for detail if you want to spend a lot of time tweaking the file. You get into a whole discussion of what is an hour of work. It can be dramatically different depending on the skill set of the resource. What is a day? Eight hours of Project work? So many variables and all predicated on the estimate of the person creating the plan.

There is an automatic leveling tool in Project under the Tools menu and it will delay overallocated work until the assigned resource is available. The only use I have found for that tool is the use the check box that says level only within available slack, otherwise it sends the timeline too far out into future. Usually I can't just delay work until a resource is available, I need to come up with a better solution.

with resource scheduling I have generally found work effort does not drive the schedule. I prefer to set all tasks to Fixed Duration and not deal with Projects effort driven scheduling default.
