What's up with WGA (XP sp2)

What's going on at Microsoft Update? I have Automatic Updates set to notify but not download or install. And I have it set to notify only in the administrator's account, so I don't get that update alert icon in the notification tray of all the users' accounts. In April, Windows Genuine Advantage showed up as a critical update. After waiting a couple of weeks as usual, I downloaded all the "critical updates" with no problems. I figured the WGA was a little bogus but that it wouldn't hurt and they'd stop bugging me. Last week I downloaded an add-in for Word and got notified that I had to download WGA before they'd let me have the add-in. I had already done it the week before, I thought, but what the heck. So I went through it again.

Today, upon logging in to the admin account, I got the "critical updates are ready for you" icon, and it's not even the second Tuesday of the month. I went to Microsoft Update and found one "critical" update listed -- yes, Windows Genuine Advantage again. Is this a glitch, or is microsoft going to make us do this every week? Anybody know what's going on?

By the way, if it's a glitch, it's probably not on my computer, because my laptop and my desktop get the same notification.

I got the notification too, for the Dutch version of Win XP. I guess Microsoft releases an updated version of WGA from time to time. Why so often? <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Probably changes when it is released for more countries and as MS figures out more ways to identify non-genuine software.

You was asked to re-install WGA because a new version (v.3) of WGA Notification was released.

This is a well-known endless war between M$ and hackers: M$ releases WGA checker and wants to hide it from hackers (that's why you can not download and save these patches usual way), hackers catch these patches anyway and hack them to approve unlicensed installations, M$ releases a new version, etc, etc...

So be prepared to re-install WGA each month or so.
