    Buy external hard drive case

What should I be looking for in an external hard drive case? I have a couple of extra IDE hard drives that I want to use as an external hard drive. Can you suggest some ideal specs (cooling, etc) and some good suppliers with reasonable prices? Thanks.

Re: Buy external hard drive case

I've purchased two or three different models over the past few years. All of them were USB or USB+FireWire, held a single drive, and required an AC adapter. Nowadays there might be cases that accommodate several drives at once. Less portable, but perhaps safer than dangling a bunch of drives here and there...

One thing that is difficult to judge from the outside is how well they account for wires that need to be routed around inside the case. Some were a hassle to install. Certain features add to the price, such as a fan (fans probably are a good idea if you plan to have the drive on for an extended period or use it heavily). Assuming the price different is not too great, the fewer screws the happier I am. Particularly for cases you plan to swap several drives in and out of, look for the ones that open by pressing buttons on the sides.

I can't think of any brands at the moment, I usually just go through what's available at Fry's and choose from among those...

I really rely on external drives. In fact I've just installed a drive in a new type two days ago. I always go with a USB/Firewire combo.

The first external drive I acquired held 5.25" devices. A real pain in the butt; it required considerable time for installation, was heavy and noisy. The second type held a 3.5

Hey hey. I also use external drives ALOT. I use Adaptec's 5.25". Yes, one of the problems is heat. If I leave mine on for too long, I can't touch it until it cools down.

Re: Buy external hard drive case

i bought this and used it for an internal DVD burner drive. i'm very happy with it and if i needed to i would definitely buy another one. i personally haven't put a hard drive in it myself but according to the reviews many other people have, with no problems. It has a quiet fan and a sturdy aluminum case that retails for around $35.00 USD. If you're from the states, check out the other ones available on newegg, it's a great site for purchasing hardware. Goodluck!
