Unwanted code added to pictures (Word 2003)

When I insert a picture in a Word document I have starting seeing <sp> next to it when the Wrapping Style is set to Square or Tight. Unfortunately this "code" also appears when the document is printed. The code is part of the paragraph as you cannot highlight it separately. To delete it you must delete the whole paragraph and thus the picture as well.

I have tried all the usual View and Print Option suspects to get rid of it but to no avail. The others in my department are also seeing it for the same documents so I'm assuming its the way
we have been set up i.e. printer set up, Word install etc.

Does anyone know what the code actually means or where it may be coming from?

    Andrew,
Thanks for pointing me to this thread.
It does indeed seem to be caused by a broken registry setting. Renaming it has fixed the problem.
