    renumbering (Word O3)

I have a large document, over 90 pages. It is cobbled together from a variety of documents by different authors using different styles and numbering schemes.
I want to renumber the entire document for consistency. I want to use outline numbering. Of course there are references that are not made with fields. In some sections I get unexpected results when I try to renumber, unnumber, promote or demote a section.
I have been through this before and it can be a time killer of intolerable proportions.
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about formatting in word, but I have not been able to discover some of the formatting that is causing these unpredictable changes.
Of course I am under a lot of pressure to get this done quickly. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>
Is there an article available that might suggest an effective and efficient approach to this type of chore?

I don't know of a trick that will simplify this. When I have to do something like this, I usually remove ALL numbering, then apply heading styles from scratch.

Useful info can be found in Shauna Kelly's How to create heading numbering and outline numbering in Microsoft Word.

Would it make sense to apply the styles first, before removing numbering? I am concerned that if I remove numbers first it may make it confusing as to what rank a given paragraph had.
Or would this cause more problems?

I think it would be better to remove all numbering first, for if you try to mix existing numbering with new styles, the result could (read: will) be a mess.
You could keep a copy of the original document around, and/or a printout, to see what should be numbered.

Thanks that makes sense and the Shauna Kelly article also looks helpful.
