    count rows with text (excel 2000)

    Seems like a simple question, but I can't seem to figure out how to count rows OR columns that only contain text. It doesn't matter what the text is, the "cell" just needs to be counted if it contains "text". The cells may contain numbers, be blank or have text within them. Any help to a newbie would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Re: count rows with text (excel 2000)

    Say that you want to count the number of cells that contain text in the range A1:A10.
    Enter the following formula in the target cell:
    <code>
    =SUM(1*ISTEXT(A1:A10))
    </code>
    and confirm it with Ctrl+Shift+Enter to make it an array formula. Another possibility, this time as a normal formula, is
    <code>
    =SUMPRODUCT(1*ISTEXT(A1:A10))
    </code>
    Both formulas use 1* to convert the result of ISTEXT, which is TRUE or FALSE, to the numeric equivalents 1 or 0.
