Hyphen to short dash (Hyphen to short dash)

I have been trying to change the hyphen (wide dash) to a short dash but can not seem to do it. I go to tools> auto correct and try to type the hyphen into the "replace" opening but it only shows the short dash. Is there some way other to do this? Win98SE Word 2000.
