    Windows Defender (Xp SP2)

While using MS Anti-Spyware a pop out suggested I install Windows Defender Beta 2. I did that and now I have lost the original icon on the desktop and nothing from Defender replaced it. HOW do I do a scan now.

You can set up your own shortcut/icon by going to C:Program FilesWindows Defender and right clicking on MSASCui.exe then on Create Shortcut. Then move it to your Desktop and change the name to suit. It gives you a rather nice part of a castle wall!

You could also start it with Start -> All Programs -> Windows Defender in the usual way, if you like.

Run it and work your way through the various options at the top of the screen...

Microsoft considered that having a desktop shortcut or a system tray icon was unnecessary, apparently.

I would add that when Windows Defender wants to tell you something (like if there's a problem after a scan, or it needs an update) you get in the system tray the "little piece of castle wall" icon with a yellow 'thing' waving around. Mt explanation is not too clear, but when you receive it you will see what I meant!

Thanx very much John. Too bad all the Tech Support guys weren't in the Lounge. Life would be so much simpler.

Windows Defender has a checkbox, under Tools > Options, that lets you have the little tower permanently in the system tray.
