    Disk Cleanup/Compress Old Files (Home/SR2)

    Hello -

Should one choose the option Compress Old Files (the size is 4,827,102)?
(I have NOT selected Compress Drive to Save Disk Space
    If yes, does Bruce Krymow

    Curious,
    It works for me.
Deleted that value a long time ago and all seems good.

As long as you have plenty of disk space why bother taking the time to do the analysis & compression. IMHO, the less messing around with your files that happens the better. With the price of another huge disk drive (or two) being so low it just isn't worth it.

    Joe,
That's the point. Deleting that reg value gets rid of the option itself as a choice.

Thanks, Joe. You answered the first question. I'll just leave those files alone.

I'll add another vote for that advice. I deleted that value long ago and do the same on every computer I setup. The process is just not necessary. Back in the days of **MB hard drives, it made sense. But not today. As Joe says, extra hard drive space is cheap these days. My <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>

Well guys, I took the step and deleted the register value cited. It will take a bit of time to determine the effect and I hope all will be well. I appreciate the advice offered.
    Best regards,

Re: Disk Cleanup/Compress Old Files (Home/SR2)

I've never picked up on this tip folks. In the event that someone HAS been allowing disk cleanup to compress files, where are the compressions being stored and how can I get rid of them if I too make this modification to the registry?

Re: Disk Cleanup/Compress Old Files (Home/SR2)

I don't think that they are "stored" per se anywhere Al. I always felt that the files were simply being compressed and left where they are. As to what happens if you have been allowing the files to be compressed and then revert to removing the registry setting that compresses them, I'd suspect that as you use the files they will be uncompressed automatically and, without the registry setting, not be recompressed. Never really gave it much thought. I just knew that I didn't like that compression feature and the time it took to compress all those files and then having to wait for them to decompress before you could use them. What a pain !!!
