    Text to speech (Word 2002)

Article 287120 in the KB describes how to use automation to import the Excel text to speech function into Word. Fine. Works OK. Problem, though: is there any way of intterupting the voice without either closing Word down or rebooting the computer?! I'm thinking of a situation where someone has selected a large chunk of text and wants to halt/pause the voice. And a supplementary: in LH Michael and LH Michelle, what does LH stand for, please?

LH stands for Lernout & Hauspie, the now defunct Belgian firm that provided speech technology to Microsoft.

See Word text to speech for additional macros, among which a "Stop speaking" macro. You can assign this to a custom toolbar button and/or keyboard shortcut.

Ooh, thank you. I had been using a macro that simply checked for more than a certain number of words before starting but that is much better (used in a school for children with assorted difficulties).
