    Hidden Footers (Word 2003)

    After you insert a footer in Word, you decide you want to temporarily hide it, so you select it and choose Format | Font | Hidden then click OK. After printing you want to get the footer back but redoing Format | Font | Hidden doesn't show a check mark, like selected hidden document text does. How can one get the hidden footer back. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Activate the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11)
    Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G)
    Type the following text or copy and paste it from this reply.

    ActiveDocument.Sections(1).Footers(wdHeaderFooterP rimary).Range.Font.Hidden = False

    Press Enter.
    If you need to do this often, you can create a macro in your Normal.dot:

    Sub UnhideFooter()
    ActiveDocument.Sections(1).Footers(wdHeaderFooterP rimary).Range.Font.Hidden = False
    End Sub

    It wouldn't be hard to expand the macro to work with multiple sections and with first-page footers etc.

    Re: Hidden Footers (Word 2003)

    The secret lies in what you are selecting. When you activate the footer and select the text to hide, make sure that you select ONLY the text. Do not use the selection bar on the left and click once to select the line, because this selects the footer entirely and when you hide, it hides the entire footer, box and all. Make sure you ONLY highlight the text using the selection tool, and then hide the text. After printing, you can then select the footer box and choose Format | Font | Hide, to unhide the text again.
    Cheers
