Can not view code (A 2002)

Recently I lost the ability to view the code in my Access XP databases.

I also use A97 and am still able to view/edit code.

When I try to create code, open the code window or view code of an existing module the system just displays the hourglass.

I have tried the MS-Office repair utility to no avail. Please Help.

Does this even happen in a blank new database? If so, you may have to reinstall Access 2002.

Yes, it also happens in a new database. I will try reinstalling Access 2002. Thanks.

Re: Can not view code (A 2002)

I have had IT reinstall Access XP.

I still can not get to the code window.

When we first installed access yesterday afternoon, logged on under the technician's ID, we created a new database and were able to access the code window.

Now, this morning, under my logon, I can not access the code window in any database, new and empty, or previously written.

    Suggestions?

It would seem to be a permissions problem. Do you have local administrator rights on your PC?
If not, perhaps IT could make you local admin temporarily and install Access under your user.

    1) Can you open the Visual Basic Editor in other Office applications such as Word or Excel?

    2) Can you log in on other PCs with the same login name? If so, can you open the Visual Basic Editor from Access there?

Re: Can not view code (A 2002)

On my machine I can access the Visual Basic editor in the Office 97 products, but not any of the Office XP products.

I have been using both Office versions for quite some time now on the same machine without any problems.

I logged on to my boss's machine who only has Office 97 and could not access the Visual Basic editor (code window).

I'd say that there is a serious problem with your user profile - perhaps it's time to start with a clean profile. I know it's a PITA, but on the other hand developing in Access is pretty much impossible if you cannot use the Visual Basic Editor.

Thank you very much for your input Hans.
I will check with our IT people again with this information and will post the results back to the message board.

Re: Can not view code (A 2002)

It is possible that VBA Code Security - which was introduced with Access 2000 - may be playing a role here. Have you tried going to Tools|Macro|Security and seeing whether altering the setting changes your problem? If it does, you problem need to start signing your DBs with a Digital Signature.

If you have not dealt with Digital Signatures before, there have been a fair amount of posts on them in the Lounge. Please post back if you need more help on setting this up.

I would definitely recomment not setting Security on Low on a permanent basis.

Re: Can not view code (A 2002)

I took a couple of vacation days. Now that I am back I can get into the VB editor. I had emailed our computer service group the messages in this thread.
Maybe they made some changes while I was gone. I will check with them and see if they did anything.

I looked at your idea of Tools/Macro/Security. I went to Tools/Macro, but do not have the option Security. I also looked under Tools/Security, but could not find anything to help.

Then I tried opening the VB editor and it opened. I will post if the Computer Service Group did anything to correct the situation.

    Thank you for your input.

I just checked with our computer service people and they have not done anything to my computer.

    Must be magic! Huh?

Try Tools|Customise|Options. If you do not have "Always show full menus" checked, then check it and then try Tools|Macro|Security.

Re: Can not view code (A 2002)

The problem accessing the VB code window has reoccurred. I tried uninstalling software that had been installed recently.

When I uninstalled Directory Opus, a file manager, and rebooted, the VB editor was once again accessible.

I will keep the board updated if the problem occurs agains.
