Viewing EPS Files

Does anyone know. Is there an easy and reliable way to view EPS files in Windows if you do not have Illustrator or other products like that?

I have heard about GSView. Can anyone tell me about that? Will it open files created in the latest version of Illustrator (CS2)?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

    Re: Viewing EPS Files

I think EPS is supposed to be independent of the application that created the file. In other words, the conversion to EPS should create standard PostScript.

Now, PostScript is not intelligible to humans, so typically you view it in a program that rasterizes it to pixels at your choice of resolutions. I've used PhotoShop Elements; haven't tried GSView.

    Re: Viewing EPS Files

I just grabbed a sample EPS file from somewhere on the web. My graphics program of choice is Paint Shop Pro which opens EPS just fine, including the sample I just grabbed. On the other hand, the FREE Irfanview which claims to handle EPS files, gives me an error that there is a problem "decoding" the file. Just in case you want to try it, here's a link to Irfanview: IrfanView - one of the most popular viewers worldwide

Have you installed the plugin for Postscript?

Apparently NOT, although I thought I had done so. I guess there's a separate plugin for EPS, huh?

    Re: Viewing EPS Files

I just went back to verify what I did when I installed Irfanview on this new PC. I took the site's "recommended" approach and ran the "one large EXE" file for (supposedly) ALL plugins, but that must not include EPS files. Did you have to do something separate to get EPS capability?

    Re: Viewing EPS Files

The "one large EXE file" should include all available plugins, including the Postscript one

POSTSCRIPT - (version 3.98): allows IrfanView to read EPS/PS/PDF files (using AFPL Ghostscript)

This plugin is also available in the iv_formats.zip download.
    (I haven't tried it myself)

    Re: Viewing EPS Files

You're absolutely right, Hans. I didn't think to scroll down to the Ps. I only looked for EPS. There must be something it didn't like about the file I tried to open, for I tried another EPS file and it opened just fine. Thanks for the tipoff!

    Big Al:

Thanks. I downloaded and installed iview398.exe and irfanview_plugins_398.exe, and then restarted my computer. Unfortunately, I was not able to open most of the EPS files that I need to view. I get the message Decode error ! Invalid EPS file. Any ideas on how to fix that? (I can view the smaller ones by dragging them into Word, but some are quite large and Word crashes with those.)

No Jerry, I'm at a loss to help. As you can tell from my posts, I don't use IrfanView very much, so hang in to see if one of the more experienced Loungers can help. It looks like you're having, in spades, the same problem I had with it which made me think it wouldn't open EPS files at all.

Post your question on the Irfanview Forum. They should be able to solve this for you.

    Re: Viewing EPS Files

If all you want to do is view them, you might consider converting them to a format you can load - for example ABC Amber EPS Converter, but I have no experience of it myself.
