    media player (ff 1.5.0.4)

I am running windows 2K with all updates applied (just applied June updates)

I installed the media player connectivity 0.6.3 and took the default setup. I am running windows media player 9.

I run CNN as my home page (www.cnn.com) - I cannot play any of the media clips they show on their site. The "Skin for the media player shows up in a window, but nothing else happens. The little box below the screen that currently shows Anderson Cooper - does not get populated either.

When I load IExplorer with CNN as the home page the video clips play as they should.

Is there something else I should be doing to run the media clips under ff? At this time the only reason I keep IE around is to see video clips periodically.

    Thanks Tom

    Re: media player (ff 1.5.0.4)

I don't know the answer, Tom, for I have the same problem with Win XP SP-2 and FF 1.5.0.4 and the problem has been with me since the earliest version of Firefox. I am running WMP 10 with XP and it works just fine on sites other than CNN. I've made sure that I have the latest version of Java installed (which I freely admit I don't understand). If I visit ANY site that has WMP content, it will play just fine in Firefox. It's only where the link is a javascript link and it just sits there. I hope maybe someone will come along and help us both out... I too usually run IE to see such videos.

On the mozillaZine forum, the CNN video question comes up regularly. Sometimes the master "sticky post" solves it (see: Quicktime/Real/Windows Media Player Issues (Windows)), and in other cases people post individual follow-up threads.

In case it provides any comfort, I can play videos at CNN.com, in a large pop-up windows, if I enable JavaScript for cnn.com and cnn.net and about:blank (I use the NoScript extension, which is why I see where the scripts are coming from).

In aboutlugins, I have the following Windows Media stuff:

<pre>Windows Media Player Plug-in Dynamic Link Library

    File name: npdsplay.dll
    Npdsplay dll

    MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
    application/asx Media Files * Yes
    video/x-ms-asf-plugin Media Files * Yes
    application/x-mplayer2 Media Files * Yes
    video/x-ms-asf Media Files asf,asx,* Yes
    video/x-ms-wm Media Files wm,* Yes
    audio/x-ms-wma Media Files wma,* Yes
    audio/x-ms-wax Media Files wax,* Yes
    video/x-ms-wmv Media Files wmv,* Yes
    video/x-ms-wvx Media Files wvx,* Yes

Edited by Bigaldoc to add URL code.[/i] See the Quick Guide, or the 1-Click TagPanel, or even <!post=this StarPost.,438749>this StarPost.<!/post>

This seems to be an ACTIVE X issue. I was unable to view ANY video content on CNN and never got WMP to show, just a box saying the plug-in was not found. I installed the active x plug-in and now it works. Link: Step-By-Step Guide: Embedded Windows Media in Firefox - MozillaZine Forums

My reply here is to Tom, in case he's depending on email notifications! Thanks Preston for the link and comment about ActiveX. I had been to that link ages ago checking on my WMP status, as far as plugins go. But I didn't realize it was an ActiveX issue so I hadn't even read that section. Just now I too installed it and tried one of the videos on CNN which now works OK! Got my <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16> that it stays that way. Thanks again. How about you, Tom?

The ActiveX version isn't necessary for the CNN site; Microsoft's "Netscape-style plugin" works for CNN videos. It might be necessary for some other sites, but I can't think of any sites where I haven't been able to view media. Perhaps there is some other difference in settings that we haven't tracked down...
