Filename & pathname restriction in file open (2002, XP Pro SR2)

HI all,

I have looked & looked in the search page, but cannot find the answer.
So here is the problem.

Excel will not open the file in the path below
dlipublicDivisionsIMProject OfficeShared InformationTECHNOLOGY & TELECOMProjectsCurrent Projects276 ISA - Outcome 100 Programme99 Meetings and Correspondence30 SLA Reports2006-04-30 SLA Assessmment - ISA Programme.xls
The file fails to open with the message "'UivisionsIMProject OfficeShared InformationTECHNOLOGY & TELECOMProjectsCurrent Projects276 ISA - Outcome 100 Programme99 Meetings and Correspondence30 SLA Reports2006-03-31 SLA Assessmment - ISA Programme.xls' could not be found. Check the spelling of the name and verify that the location is correct. ...."

Since I am trying to open it with Explorer or the file open dialog of excel, I am sure that I have the right location and name.

However it will open
dlipublicDivisionsIMProject OfficeShared InformationTECHNOLOGY & TELECOMProjectsCurrent Projects276 ISA - Outcome 1ISA DisseminationManagement20 Meetings and CorrespondenceStatus Reports200605Forecast.xls

All I can think of is that Excel has a limitation on the total length of the file path and file name.

Can anyone enlighten me.

Yes, the limit is somewhere around 220 characters. Can you assign a drive letter to for example

dlipublicDivisionsIMProject OfficeShared InformationTECHNOLOGY & TELECOMProjectsCurrent Projects276 ISA - Outcome 1

That way, the resulting path would be well below 200 characters.

Thanks Hans,

You confirmed what I expected

Yes we can use path names/drive name substitution, I think though that this organisation has too many path varaints for that to be practical.
The file structure was created to support a future EDMS, however that approach will now need to be revisited.

If the folder structure can still be modified, I'd go for shorter folder names (codes if need be) - and fewer levels, if possible.
