Nice bullet style (all)

Normally with a bullet style, you can either have as much space between list items as before/after the list, or you can suppress the space between list items completely.

I've found a trick to achieve a bit of space between list items (and a lot of space before/after the list)... See the screenshot below.

Another work-around is pretty simple: Use white (invisible) paragraph borders at the top and bottom of the list style.
The borders are suppressed between paragraphs of the same style.

The drawbacks: You are limited to the maximum border width of 6 pt, and Word leaves room for the borders if the paragraphs start at the beginning of the page or end at the bottom (which doesn't look too nice).

Thats very tricky - obviously you have too much time on your hands Klaus

The border width is not so much of a restriction since you can also change the standoff position of the border by clicking the Options button. This gives you another 31pt (in Word 2000) of separation in addition to the 6pt border thickness.

Well, obviously -- and somebody asked how to do it, so I thought I might as well post it rather than send it by mail...
Hadn't thought of the options for standoff: Thanks!

In Word 2002 the "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style" setting is non-functional inside tables. Do you know if this has this been fixed in the Word 2007 Beta?

Hi Klaus,

Can always count on you to come up with a clever solution to a problem.

Why not create a char style called something like invisiblecharacter with font formatting of a bigger point size (eg, 16 point), white color, and hidden just to be safe? Then if you insert a character using that style anywhere, say, in the para of a list item, it will add the extra vertical space. The drawback to this is that what you see on the screen will look funny but it will print ok. Another drawback is that you have to define the font size absolutely so if your "real" style text is of the same size or bigger, this doesn't do anything. There are many times I wish I could define a size that's relative to something else - something like font size of "some other style" + 4.

Maybe the border trick is best because it doesn't depend on sizes and keeps the screen version "clean."

You can get the correct visual effect by simply putting the correct space before and after as manual paragraph formatting on the first and last list items. The advantage of these alternative approaches is that you can reorder the list items and retain the spacing in the correct places.

Good point about rearranging the items. But I always get mine right the first time.

Hi Steve,

Surprisingly, it seems to fe fixed.
Word 2007 has new problems with tables and styles though. The default paragraph style in tables is "Normal", and "Normal" by default now has 1.15 multiple line spacing and 10pt space after.
If you create a table, those paragraph formats are overridden with manual formatting (single line spacing, no space after), but if you remove manual formatting (Ctrl+Q, or apply Normal style again), you get it again.

Hi Stuart, Fred,

Yes... the goal of the work-arounds was to create lists with only one paragraph style (no multiple styles, no manual formatting).

No way. Did the usability tests exclude everyone who has previously used Word? This just makes no sense to me.

The argument I heard was that those settings make your typical Office documents look nicer, and text with more line spacing is supposed to be easier to read.
Office users that never customize anything -- and never modify styles -- get typographically nicer documents, and the power users can change the styles whichever way they want.

I don't like the general change much either... especially if manual formatting is used to remove the style formatting such as in tables.
