Styles not consistent throughout document (Word 2003)

I have a document where the same style looks different in two different places. I have tried reapplying the style in both places, but it still stays the same. The main difference is the spacing. In one place it is Single. In another it is 15.8 exactly.

It is supposed to be single space, but even if I change it to single in the style definition and try to apply it, I can go back into the style definition and it has reverted back to 15.8 exactly.

Any ideas what is going on?

    Thanks!!

Try selecting the text and typing Control-Space and Control-Q this should reset any manual formatting so that only the formatting of the style is applied.

That does reset the paragraph formating. However, it also changes the style from "Style1" to "Style1 +". If I try to reapply "Style1" the line spacing changes back to 15.8 exactly, even the the style definition has it as single spacing.

It is enough to pull what little hair I have out!!

    <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> sounds like some kind of corruption to me.

What happens if you create a new document based on the same template and copy in the content from the previous one a bit at a time?

Is one of these styles inside a table and the other one outside? Table styles are capable of over-riding the paragraph style definitions completely independently of local settings.

Can you post a sample which displays the problem?

    Andrew

I have been driven crazy trying to solve a similar problem. I have set styles for table text and table headings and they insisted on defaulting to a style based on Index 6 when ever I updated them. The established styles change every time I update.

Following from your question, I highlighted the Table Text and clicked on Table Grid. The formatting returned to what I wanted and the styles still say Table Text and Table Text Centred.

    Problem solved but why?

Thank you for provoking the thought.

That's it!! That worked for me too!

However, for the record, you have to right-click in the table and then click Table AutoFormat (or click in the table and on the Tables menu, click Table AutoFormat). Then click the table style in question in the Table Styles list. It does NOT appear that you have to actually select text to do this.

It took me a while to figure this out from the last post, so I wanted to make it clear for others. Regardless of the time spent, it was priceless. Thanks!!

Table styles are new to Word 2002 and 2003 - Table Autoformat is the way this sort of thing used to be implemented in the earlier versions of Word (and I guess this has been left in there for consistency)

The usual way to apply a table style is to have your cursor somewhere in the table and then select the required table style from either the Styles Task Pane or the Styles drop down. Once the table style is applied to a table you will only see the table style name if the current paragraph style is 'Normal', if it is anything else then the style name that shows will be the paragraph style.

Most of the Table Styles are hidden from the styles list by default - you may need to customise the styles list to display some of the table styles that are hidden in every Word doc.
