Updates - stop download

Hi -

I clicked on the yellow shield in Notification area fto download updates and it is taking forever. There is no separate window/icon to determine the percentage downloaded (have to hover mouse over the shield and hope it will give this info). HOw can one stop the download?

Try the following:
- Select Start | Run...
- Type services.msc and click OK or press Enter.
- Select the Automatic Updates service.
- Click the Stop button on the toolbar.
- Open Windows Explorer
- Navigate to the folder C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload.
- Delete all files and subfolders, or at least those dated today.
- Switch back to the Services window (or reopen it using the same method as above)
- Select the Automatic Updates service.
- Click the Start Service button on the toolbar.

I have had similar problems using update by way or the notification icon.
That is why, if I see that notification, I will go directly to the WIndows Update site to get the updates. It also allows me to see WHAT the updates are and if I really do need them. For instance, I don't use Messenger, so why DL an update for something I don't use?

So far as stopping the process, you might try seeing it the Task Manager sees the activity and click "end task".
I have also rebooted out of it and then Updated direct, without any apparent ill effects.

The first thing I tried was Task Manager, but the download didn't show there. From now on, I shall go directly to the site, as you suggested.
