Windows XP Hibernation (SP2 + hotfixes)

HI,

I have been using my new Laptop for about 6 months. I initially had a hibernation problem (ie. not hibernating) related to having more than 1GB of RAM. I installed the suggest Microsoft Hotfix, and hibernate worked fine... until a day or so ago.
Now hibernate does not work. This coincided unsurprisingly with the latest set of hotfixes issued through automatic update. My initial response was to uninstall the updates, which I have done. Still no hibernate. The current process after initiating hibernation is desktop clears as expected screen goes black, then 1 second or so later the desktop reappears fully populated.
Have tried reinstalling the original hotfix, but no joy.
I am now out of ideas.

Has anyone else had this problem following the latest hotfixes?
Does anyone have any suggestions?

What happens if you try to hibernate manually? (Hold down Shift while clicking on the Start and then "Turn off computer" buttons, and select Hibernate.)

On one of my PCs, at the time where hibernation should take place, I get a message on the screen (about it not being able to hibernate because of a driver problem with a Parallel Printer Logical Port), but you would have noticed something like that, I suspect!

The effect I mentioned earlier is what happens when I manually hibernate.
When I shut the lid, the screen shuts off but the laptop does not shutdown, as soon as I open the lid the desktop appears unaffected immediately.

When I had the original hibernate problem I had an API error message, see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=909095. But with this problem there are no error messages.

The only entry I get in the event log (system) is: The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service entered the running state.
There are no entries in the Application or Security logs.

Did you try to check and clean your hard drive?

1. Check your hard drive for errors (click Start | Run, type CHKDSK /F press Enter and reboot your laptop after prompt).
2. Clean unnecessary files from your hard drive using Disk Cleanup utility (Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup). Warning: DO NOT USE "Compress old files" option!
3. Run Disk Defragmenter (Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Defragmenter).

If after these steps the problem persists, do following:

4. Flush hiberfil.sys file. To do so, Open Power Options applet in Control Panel (click Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance {in Category View only} | Power Options), then click Hibernate tab and uncheck "Enable hibernation" checkbox. Click Apply button, then check the checkbox once again and click Apply, OK.

Usually these simple steps can fix such kind of problems.

Yep, have now tried all those suggestions, chkdsk, clean hard drive, defrag and recreate Hibernation file.

I am starting to prepare myself for the possibility of a re-install.

For anyone's interest, I have got round this problem by disabling the Parallel Port Logical Interface from
Device Manager -> View -> Show Hidden Devices
then expanding System Devices, and right clicking on Printer Port Logical Interface, and Disabling it

I'm not sure if this will have an implication for my ancient HP Laserjet 3100, but We Shall See...!

Your Laserjet 3100 is seasoned. My Laserjet II is very old. In my closet are two pairs of jeans from my college days and they, alas, are ancient.

Hope this puts things in perspective.

There's a quality difference between the two: my 3100 is due for recycling, since the print quality is poor. I only really keep it for the scanning.

We have a Laserjet 4m at work whose firmware is dated 1993, and it still works (fairly) well, although the print quality isn't up to the 4-y-o LaserJet 4100n we've just bought...

I'm amazed that your LaserJet II still runs, though!
