    continuous rebooting (XP Pro SP2)

After installing SpyCatcher (Tenebril) and rebooting, the system just wants to endlessly reboot (about 1 second after the desktop icons appear)...

I tried the known "last good configuration", but it does the same thing.

There is no setpooint to restore to when I come up in safe mode...

    Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried uninstalling SpyCatcher while in safe mode?

While in safe mode right click My Computer. Select Properties | Advanced | Startup and Recovery Settings. Make sure that "Automatically Restart" is not checked. That should make the system stop and allow you to see an error code. While in safe mode have you checked the Event Log for errors?

Re: continuous rebooting (XP Pro SP2)

When I uncheck "automatically restart, I get a blue screen that says:
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.......
    ......
    ...Technical info:
    *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xA2719146, 0xA2216994, 0x00000000)
    *** AVGFSH.SYS - Address A2719146 base at A2716000, datestamp 3F2E864F
Beginning dump of physical memory, etc."

This prevents me from checking the Event Log for errors (How would I do that anyways?)

I'm just guessing that the AVGFSH.SYS file mentioned may relate to AVG antivirus software (?)

Sounds like an AVG problem. Did you download any updates to AVG before the problem started ?? Check this thread for a possible solution.

    -----------------------------------------
Event Log for errors (How would I do that anyways?)
    -----------------------------------------

Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer. Check the logs for Applications, Security and System for error messages.
If you see an error, you can right click on it and click "properties" to see more detail.

Re: continuous rebooting (XP Pro SP2)

How would I get in to remove AVG (or update it), assuming that was the issue, if I am getting the BSOD?

Try booting into Safe Mode ( hit F8 a few times on start up ).
Then use Control Panel>AddRemove Programs to uninstall the program.
    Try a reboot. IF OK...
Download a new copy of AVG and install that. Hopefully that patch is included in the new DL version.

IIRC, I get the BSOD when I try to enter "safe mode"...?

I thought you said in your first post "when you come up in Safe Mode"?

Re: continuous rebooting (XP Pro SP2)

If you can't even get into Safe Mode, The I would do a "Repair" reinstall of Windows XP.

Check this MSKB article on how to do it, if you are not familiar with the method.

Re: continuous rebooting (XP Pro SP2)

I think you are right...I wasn't in safe mode when iI got the BSOD...
Sorry for the confusion...but maybe good news for me as far as uninstalling AVG...

(Since the original issue seemed to arise while installing SpyCatcher, I wonder what the link to AVG would be?)

BTW, I installed SpyCatcher on the work computer without any problems and it has helped to identify an issue that previously was making that computer very sluggish...(apparently Novell/Groupwise related)

    Thanks.
I have had good luck doing a "repair" previously (as opposed to a recovery).
