Pest Trap!!!

I keep getting this annoying balloon at the bottom of the screen! It pops up every minute!! It says the following:

Your computer is infected!
Windows has detected spyware infection!
It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you!
Click here to protect your computer from spyware!

Then when you click on it, it starts running a scan and wants you to purchase Pest Trap! If you opt to continue unprotected it now adds another icon to the tool bar and the balloon continues to pop up every minute!!

I've deleted the program Pest Trap and ram Ad-Aware and Spybot and deleted anything that the scans showed, restarted the computer and the balloon is still there! I tried right clicking on it and it doesn't give you any options! I am new at this sort of thing, is there anyway I can get rid of this or should I take it to a pro??

Download and run the free program, AUTORUNS. Look very carefully at the entries after it runs. ( there will be many )
Delete any mention of Pest Trap or the name of the company that markets it.
Also if that doesn't work?, go to the website of Pest trap and demand a method of UNinstall for their "program".

You can get autoruns at: System Internals

Post back to let us know how you are making out with this.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
Today it is called golf!

Another add on to the above.

There seems to be a removal tool available for Pest Trap at 2-Spyware

Re: Pest Trap!!!

Try downloading SpywareBlaster and then update it. That may block the thing from calling home and prevent this popup from coming back. I would also follow Bob's suggestions just to see if you can't remove the root cause of the problem, but get a copy of SpywareBlaster. It's , runs in the background and requires only that you update the program (I check for updates weekly). HTH

Re: Pest Trap!!!

I tried the Autoruns, but there was nothing labeled Pest Trap or the supposed company that made it. I also went to 2-Spyware, their instructions were easy to follow, but I am not familiar enough with what files actually are good files and which ones were bad, no files were labeled Pest Trap! On the 2-Spyware web site I found an article mentioning Spyware Detector. I loaded that did a complete scan, restarted my computer and it's gone. Thank you both for all your help, Spyware Detector did cost me $29.95, but it was a lot cheaper then taking it to a pro!! I'm learning more and more, every day, but will probably never be at your level. Thanks again!!

But did you download SpywareBlaster? It is a very handy program to have and would have saved you that money you spent. I've had it for years and have never had any 'baddies' on my pc because of it...it stops those 'baddies' from even getting on your pc.

Thanks for the backup Lonnie. SpywareBlaster is aces !!!! I haven't had a nasty on my system for years. At least none that have gotten past the defenses. And I take some chances I shouldn't from time to time. But I've also loaded it on a couple systems that had persistent popups and the popups stopped because SpywareBlaster blocked access to their home sites !!

It's a good thing you and Lonnie started that line of thinking. I had forgotten about updating for quite some time and there is a June 15 SpywareBlaster database up...
