Straightforward scanning software

I want to scan in the various project plans feaured in my woodworking magazines, for organization and reference. [1] Unfortunately, I find that my scanning software (Epson) clnky for the sort of workflow I want to use.

First you have to "preview". then you have to "select" the area, then you have to choose a file save name, then you have to scan.

I basically want to set all this up once at the beginning, and just keep hitting a "scan" button, and having it save the 81/2x11 scan to a incremented file name, until I tell i otherwise.

Anyone know of scanning software that will do this. I don't really mind paying something for it either.

[1] If anyone wonders, reproduction rights for the plans are generally given, as many plans need to be scaled to be of any use. Also, this should be fair use, since I own the magazine, and am excerpting parts, not the entire volume.

The two "biggies" that do exactly what you are wanting to do and better than any other that I have tried are these (version #'s are the last one's I was aware of but they may have been updated since that time):

    1. OmniPage Pro 15
    2. Abbyy Fine Reader Pro 8.0

However, the price is quite hefty for OmniPage Pro and a bit less for Abbyy Fine Reader. Both have their strengths and weaknesses but either would work. Abbyy Fine Reader is less complex and easier to setup and use. If I had to describe the differences I would have to say OmniPage Pro is akin to Photoshop CS and Abbyy Fine Reader is akin to PaintShop Pro.

Ah! That reminds me, I should have a copy of Omnipage SE somewhere here. Site license came with the photocopier.

Well, I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but most always the "bundled" OCR programs that come with a scanner are next to useless for anything but plain text documents. And even then, the error rate they have is quite high compared to the full version of the program. I think they include them to create enough frustration to get the user to buy the full version of the product. IMHO, this is a really stupid idea because if the novice user finds the bundled version woefully lacking, why would he/she buy the full version if it is indicative of how it might work? But the truth of the matter is, the full versions of these bundled programs do work exponentially better.

If you can find the bundled program, go ahead and give it a try. You might be one of the exceptions to the rule and it will suffice for your particular needs.

I believe this is one of the many "hidden gem" features of IrfanView Graphic Viewer. From memory, you can set & forget the Twain dialog at the start, then just start the mass production run.

Holy buckets that program sure does a lot. (Note to self, send Irfan a few Euros...)

Thanks, Alan that seems about perfect.
